As our population ages, the needs of older adults become increasingly diverse and complex. While our local social service organizations provide essential support, there are many items and services that fall outside their coverage. Social service organizations often focus on fundamental needs such as healthcare, housing, basic nutrition and transportation. However, there are numerous other necessities that significantly impact the quality of life for older adults but are not typically covered. Products like incontinence supplies or nutritional supplements are often not covered by Medicare or Medicaid. Many older adults require modifications to their homes to ensure safety and accessibility, such as grab bars, ramps, and bathroom modifications. These essential items and services can significantly enhance the quality of life for older adults. However, we know that many older adults live on fixed incomes and often struggle to afford items not covered by social service entities or their benefits. This is where the Senior Fund steps in, offering crucial assistance to fill these gaps.
For nearly 30 years, the Senior Fund has provided vital support to older adults, helping meet needs that cannot be addressed through existing community resources and local organizations. Coordinated by the Rio Grande Area Agency on Aging, the Fund supports individuals aged 60 and older who apply directly to determine eligibility. Agency staff carefully screen each request to ensure no other benefits or resources are available before accessing the Senior Fund for assistance. This additional support allows the Rio Grande Area Agency on Aging to expand its reach and serve more older adults, especially since federal funding is often insufficient to meet the growing demand. Items purchased through the Fund include hearing aids, dentures, medical equipment and supplies, residential safety repairs, and home modifications that enhance accessibility. These one-time services play a critical role in helping older adults maintain their independence and continue living in their communities.
